A common issue of teachers constantly assigning obnoxious amounts of homework frustrates a majority of students across the country. For some reason, most educators give out an abundant quantity of homework with the excuse that the assignment aids in reinforcing what was learned in class that day. Sure teachers have a point about teaching the lesson again, however there is no need to give out an unnecessary amount of questions that are repetitive and time consuming. Assignments like these are a waste of time and serve limited purpose for the students completing them, as well as teachers grading the work. By assigning less homework, teachers would have less to grade, freeing up their time outside of work.

Not only are stressed out high schoolers worried about their grades, but also extracurriculars and sports. After all colleges and universities look for a well rounded student, someone who excels in both the classroom and clubs and sports. According to the American Psychological Association, teenagers report their stress level during the academic year stands at a 5.8 on a 10-point scale. This high level of stress exceeds the healthy average of a 3.8. Additionally, the average stress level of adults is a 5.1, which the teen level also surpasses.

Two ways to reduce stress is by exercising and socializing, these techniques cannot be utilized by students who need relaxation because homework hinders them from having a social life. Unnecessary homework needs to be taken out of the mix. Teachers should reconsider allotting non correlating assignments just to assign something, or as “busy work.” Non-benefiting work that creates a burden is the last thing teenagers need on their to do list.
