TEWKSBURY – With many options for clothing being promoted for the fall, this interesting headwear will have everyone wondering if you’re hitting the runway or robbing a bank. Introducing the Balaclava!

Although they were first worn by Russian Soldiers during the Crimean War to keep warm, Balaclavas are beginning to resurface. The newest trend for this fall are snug-fitting masks with patterns and often jewelry attached for style. They are a little more fashionable than the designs during the War. Luxury brands such as Calvin Klein, Gucci, and Marni have showcased Balaclavas at fashion shows to promote their new fall line of clothing.

Although they seem to be just a beanie, Balaclavas go for about $290 on the Gucci website which is $290 more expensive than the free beanies every grandmother knits in the winter. The steep price of the Balaclavas make them less likely to be spotted at Tewksbury Memorial High School (TMHS).

People have many different opinions when it comes to fashion but the consensus seems to be uniform throughout TMHS. “Those look very ridiculous and I would never even spend $290 on any piece of clothing anyways,” stated Matthew Cahill when asked for his opinion on the headwear. Likewise, another student said, “What even is that? It looks like something a criminal would wear let alone something that would be worn in a fashion show!”

With many options out there for clothing this fall, it is unlikely that you will see many people wearing Balaclavas as most people think they are not fashionable. However, it will be interesting to see how people will respond to the steep price of these glorified beanies and how the luxurious brands will respond to how the consumers act.
