WASHINGTON DC — A little over three weeks ago, Stacey Abrams was invited to deliver the Democratic party’s response to President Trump’s State of the Union Address, which will take place on February 5, 2019. Stacey was called upon by the Senate Minority Leader, Chuck Schumer, and after discussing the idea she accepted the position of addressing the president, the country, and the minority voices whom Abrams has represented throughout her political career.

This past year, Abrams emerged from the crowd as one of the most influential and dynamic politicians representing the Democratic party. As the former minority leader of the Georgia House of Representatives, she has become a powerful voice for minorities throughout the country and is known for speaking out against the voting inequality that occurred during her gubernatorial election this past November, along with numerous other elections that took place this past year. She narrowly lost to the Republican candidate, Brian Kemp, by a mere 0.4 %.

Abrams tweeted that “At a moment when our nation needs to hear from leaders who can unite for a common purpose, I am honored to be delivering the Democratic State of the Union response.” Her supporters couldn’t be more thrilled to hear from her as well, and are expecting powerful words in response to all of the controversial politics that have occurred this past year under the current administration, of which Abrams generally stands for the polar opposite.

Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, said, “Stacey Abrams embodies the American Dream, and her powerful message of progress for all is deeply needed during this time for our country.” Although past responses to Trump’s addresses have not been very successful and even resulted in brutal mockery on social media, the House is hopeful that Abram’s presence and powerful language will reach all corners of the country and spread an opposing message to that of the current Republican administration.

On January 22 Abrams said, “I plan to deliver a vision for prosperity and equality, where everyone in our nation has a voice and where each of those voices is heard.” Her response will be on February 5 following Trump’s address, and the California Attorney General and former House member, Xavier Becerra, will be delivering the Democratic response in Spanish after Abrams’ speech.

Abrams delivered a very successful and eloquent speech on February 5 that discussed equality between all Americans, understanding each others’ viewpoints, and working together to make a supportive, hard-working nation.
