Throughout the years, Tewksbury’s boys track team has seen a wide variety of victories, with a fair share of unfortunate defeats. Each season there are stand out athletes, but this year seems to be quite different. The depth within the boys sprinter group alone has been an outstanding addition. This has been the strongest team in recent years, judging by scoring and personal performances.

The captains of the boys track team are Colby Wilson, Colton Rusch, Matt Cahill, Kevin Carroll, Joey Schifano, and Casey Ryan. Through all four years of their winter track seasons this will be the first time that they have a chance at winning the Division III State Meet. To capitalize on this opportunity, the head coach, Mr. Peter Molloy has said numerous times that it is all about teamwork and building one another up instead of having negative feelings.

During state relays this year on January 19, the boys team had a devastating 4 x 50 yard hurdle race. The team was aiming to qualify for nationals with this specific event, but were disqualified after a team member could not clear a hurdle. This set-back hurt the team, but there still were many outstanding performances within the meet. Including the shot put relay that won the entire event, 4 x 200 meter relay came in third place, and the sprint medley, 4 x 400 meters, and shuttles dash teams placed. All who placed in the top six were awarded medals for their accomplishments.

After having the honor to speak with captain Colton Rusch, I was given the overall feeling associated with the teams performance: “We finished in 5th place as a team, which was disappointing because we had hoped for more. However, our team score on that day doesn’t truly reflect the full picture: I am proud of the effort and talent on our team, and we never fail to bring it.” This mentality seems to be the underlying glue of the boys winter track team, and has clearly been working to their advantage.

Despite the small set back of the shuttle hurdles team not qualifying for nationals, they will have another chance this Sunday, February 10th to redeem themselves. Along with the MVC league meet this Friday, where each individual will compete in their respective events.
