Yesterday the New York Knicks held a meeting for their young All-Star Kristaps Porzingis to talk about the state of the Knicks and how his recovery is going from his Torn ACL that he suffered in the middle of last season. Obviously, the struggles of the Knicks were talked about with the Knicks having one of the worst records in the NBA at 10-40. Porzingis basically said he was concerned about where the direction of the Knicks was going. Porzingis has been very vocal about his desire to win in his young career and the Knicks have yet to do that since he was drafted. To no fault of his own, he was having the best season of his career last year before the ACL injury and the team looked promising and being someone who could sneak into the playoffs. That wasn’t the case and since then the Knicks are have one of the worst records in the NBA.

In that said meeting of Porzingis in the Knicks, Kristaps expressed his desire to be traded from New York. Reliable sources like Adrian Wojnarowski reported this earlier in the day. Nobody was sure what the Knicks would do because Porzingis didn’t demand a trade, but it was something that he definitely wanted. About an hour after the request it came out that the Knicks would push to move him before the NBA Trade Deadline. Most fans were now thinking what their favorite team could give up for Porzingis and show how much they wanted him.

The team that ended up making a deal for Kristaps was the Dallas Mavericks. This was a huge move for them and the league. That is because the Mavs are having a decent season where they are just outside of the playoffs and have the favorite to win the rookie of the year, Luka Doncic. Doncic is having one of the best rookie seasons in a while and has made fans think he is the next big thing. Pairing him with Porzingis seems to be something that can make the Mavericks take the leap that gets them into the playoffs and maybe further.

The trade was the Mavs receive Kristaps Porzingis, Tim Hardaway Jr, Courtney Lee, and Trey Burke while the Knicks receive Dennis Smith Jr, Deandre Jordan, Wesley Matthews, and 2 1st round picks. Most people looked at that trade to start and thought it was a complete steal for the Mavs, but then it came out that the Knicks would be able to get 75 million dollars in cap space which is a crazy amount. This will be one the most superstar packed off seasons and the Knicks are a good location for most free agents. They are a big market with a lot of money and superstars like Kevin Durant are expected to be having the Knicks at the top of their list.

We won’t know who will win the trade for really 10 years. That is because any player could turn into a star in one season. A good example of that is Victor Oladipo who was a decent player and a starter for every team he was on. Once he got to the Pacers he turned into a franchise player. So, that just shows that any player can make a turn around. Those picks that the Knicks gave up could be superstars and then they win the trade. That’s why I think it’s a good deal for both teams even though Porzingis is the best player in the deal.
