Tattoos date far back in time and have become one of the most popular body modifications all around the world. Tattoos have been used as a way to “brand” people, to mark them as part of a group or population of people. It used to be rare to see someone flaunting around their ink, but now almost 38% of the population has one.

These tattoos are especially attractive to teens because of how easy and simple it is to do to yourself or others. Using household items, people can create tattoos that look and last just as long as if done by a professional. Stick-and-poke tattoos are done all over the world whether it be in your friends basement or a tattoo salon which is why more and more people are starting to hop on the trend.

To do this, people use needles (mostly found around their house), attach it to a pencil with tape, wrap the top of the needle with thread, and use India ink or even the ink from a pen. It is highly recommended people are as sterile as possible to prevent infections. Dipping the needle and thread into the ink, people pierce the skin hole by hole slowly forming their creations.

There is a main concern coming from this is the health risks people are not taking precaution of. Teenagers especially who are not of age are not being as careful as they should be. If everything is not correctly sanitized or the right tools are being used, major health problems can arise. There was a report of a teen who was diagnosed with ink poisoning from busting open a ballpoint pen to use as ink for his tattoo.

Although this trend is on the rise, be sure to take all precautions before you go poking away.
