On Match 17, 2019 the girls high school hockey team won its first state championship in program history. The Tewksbury/Methuen Red Ranger’s beat #1 seed, undefeated Austin Prep in the state championship, in double overtime.

The Red Rangers were seeded at #3 coming into the tournament, and destroyed every team in their path up until the TD Garden. In the first round, the Red Rangers beat Westford Academy by a convincing score of 6-2. In the quarter finals, the team defeated Peabody by another convincing score of 7-1 to advance to the Semi-finals. In the Semi-finals, the Red Rangers came out flying and destroyed Long-Meadow by a score of 9-1 to punch their ticket to TD Garden.

However, the State championship game was not like the previous playoff games for the Red Rangers. About halfway through the second period Austin Prep fired a shot in to take a 1-0 lead. With about 8:10 left in the game, the Red Rangers evened things up on a 2-1 break in. From there, it was the goalie showdown of the year. Red Ranger goalie, Kaia Hollingsworth, stole the show in OT stopping multiple quality chances.

This one however was not going to be decided in one OT, and required a second OT period. The Red Ranger’s were going to have a powerplay to start the second overtime, but unfortunately they were not able to convert. Just as the power play was expiring, Senior Cassidy Gruning sent a pass over to Senior Julia Masotta who then sent a pass directly out front of the Austin Prep net to Carolyn Curley who was on the doorstep to give the Red Rangers there first ever State Championship.
