This year the Billboard Music Awards was broadcasted on May 1st and was hosted by Kelly Clarkson on NBC. The categories for the awards were: Top Artist, Top New Artist, Billboard Chart Achievement Award, Top Male Artist, Top Duo/ Group, Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Streaming Song Artist, Top Song Sales Artist, Top Radio Artist, etc. This year the artist that got the most nominations overall was Cardi B with 21 nominations.

The awards were determined for each group through a public vote online. The more votes that the artist got, the more the chances they got towards the award. In the end, the award is given to the artist that gets the most votes in that category. The nominees of the BBMAs are based on the sales, streaming, and social services, that the artist provides. Since there are so many genres of music, there is a big representation of music overall. Therefore, there is an equal distribution of awards that are given and no one group that is more appreciated than the others. By having the specific categories, it creates a better representation of each style of music and allows different kinds of music to be brought together in one place as well.

Not only is the matter of the awards an important ordeal, but the matter of who performed. The artists who performed at the show was: Kelly Clarkson, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift featuring Brendon Urie, Paula Abdul, Dan + Shay with Tori Kelly, Halsey, Ciara, Madonna & Maluma, Jonas Brothers, Khalid, BTS & Halsey, Mariah Carey, Panic! At the Disco, and Khalid. Many of these artists have recently released new songs that were performed at the show. These include Taylor Swift opening with ME, BTS & Halsey performed Boy With Luv, the Jonas Brothers with Sucker, and Ariana Grande with 7 Rings. Since there were so many performers many styles of music were represented at this event.

During this show the artist with the most Billboards was Drake, who won 12 in this year’s BBMA, now having a total of 27 Billboards. Also, BTS won the top group/ duo award which makes them the first K-pop group to win this award. Mariah Carey won the Billboard Icon award after singing some of her greatest hits. Cardi B won 6 out of her 21 nominations including, Top Rap Song and Top Female Rap Artist. The Top Rock Artist was awarded to Imagine Dragons, who gave an interesting speech towards the LGBTQ community. There were numerous amounts of other awards that were given out on the red carpet and were not shown during the show, but the winners were announced on Billboard’s social media platforms.

The ones who truly win are the fans since they are the people who make it possible for these artists to even have the chance to win the award. As for the show as a whole, many of the performances that took place received positive feedback from fans and celebrities alike. Also, the awards that were given out allowed each artist to appreciate their work and to be able to thank their fans. Overall, this year’s BBMAs was successful in terms of the awards themselves and the performances that created a lively atmosphere for the show. As for next year’s BBMAs, it should be interesting to see how music will change and what artists will be nominated.
