Bus Accident Brings Up Concern of Bus Safety

Shawn Manson

Amherst woman struck, and killed by school bus on Wednesday. Eva Fenner, age 88, passed away around 11 am on Wednesday. Fenner, a longtime resident of Amherst, was struck by a school bus exiting Crocker Farm Elementary School. Neighbors state that Fenner had lived very close to the school. Luckily no children were injured in the incident.

Bus safety is very important to know, for students, drivers, and pedestrians. For students, bus safety is more focused towards their time riding the bus, while pedestrians should be educated on bus safety surrounding the bus. Students should be seated at all times, refrain from screaming, yelling, pushing or shoving. Bus drivers need to be aware of their surroundings at all times, to prevent a similar incident from occurring in the future.

The death of Eva Fenner should open the eyes of neighboring towns and cities. Schools should increase their bus safety rules, both now and for the future. The main goal of public school busses is to safely return children to their homes without incident. The majority of the time, that is achieved, but from time to time tragedies like these do occur.
