In a world where there are so many different forms of art and expression, fashion is often thought of last in terms of the most important and effective way to express oneself and creativity. Contrary to this belief, fashion is one of the most dominant forms of art as it is one we use on a daily basis whether we realize it or not.

Fashion allows us to portray who we are, what we stand for, and who we aspire to be all at the same time. What you choose to put on your body can determine the way you view yourself as well as how other people view you and the statement you may be trying to express through your clothing. Engaging with our artistic abilities and creativity, even as they are essential aspects to embrace in our lives, can often be difficult to do in times like we are living right now. However, it is in times like these that we need to be expressive the most and be able to find ways to show how we are feeling.

We are forced to connect with art everyday when we choose what we wear and when we make observations on what others wear and what it says about them. Fashion is a pure form of communication that is being acknowledged more everyday by those who choose to be artists of it. Whether we are communicating culture, religion, passion, or occupation, we are telling a story with what we wear and the way we wear it.

It is understandable that many choose not to care about fashion or to believe it has nothing to do with them and in certain situations they would be correct. However, fashion is a world wide concept that is forever changing and evolving and, without noticing, we all evolve with it. We often change our looks and what we wear to match others or whatever is most new and popular.

In the constantly changing world of trends and fads, we are impelled by fashion to be educated and up to date on new movements in society because whether we recognize it or not, we are all impacted by them in one way or another. If we remember “the dress debate” from 2015, we are able to see the massive impact fashion has on the way we connect with people. This debate brought a lot of controversy to our lives for at least a couple of months. Whether it was walking through the hallways at school, in the mall, or at a restaurant, it was not unusual to hear people arguing about whether “the dress” was white and gold or blue and black.

Celebrations are constantly being held in major cities throughout the world, celebrating fashion and its effect on our lives. For example, fashion week in Milan, Italy is a week where designers display their collections in runway style fashion shows for not only buyers to view but the media. Events such as this are large influencers of how and when current and upcoming trends begin.

Being able to be comfortable and expressive in what we wear is such an important part of our well-being and happiness as humans. As such, we can begin to understand others and what is important to them through what they choose to wear, making fashion a true form of art and one of great importance that allows us to connect with one another.
