On September 27th, 2023 The Writers Guild Of America, also known as WGA, signed a tentative agreement with The Alliance Of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). This was the second longest strike in writers history coming in at 148 days. The writers began the strike to receive better pay and better working conditions. Although the writers are no longer striking, The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) are still actively striking. This being said, it is speculated that television will not continue quite yet.
On May 2nd, 2023 WGA began their strike. The strike commenced because writers were no longer going to accept not being paid enough, not having guaranteed pay if they worked for streaming services, not receiving any paid sick days and having no protection from Artificial Intelligence. AMPTP met with WGA on several occasions throughout the strike that resulted in no resolution.
WGA proposed their new requirements to continue working. They proposed that they want guaranteed minimum wage. Some writers were left negotiating their pay with streaming services after doing all of the work. The writers wanted more hours and more available job offerings. Writers have been very concerned with Artificial Intelligence stealing their jobs because of how advanced it has become. AMPTP was not offering to help the writers so that is when the strike was proposed.
Television has been severely hindered and upheld since the strike began. No writing had been done since May 2nd. No talk shows or reality shows have aired. Podcasts have also been put on hold. Drew Barrymoore was recently “canceled” as the media says. She attempted to run her show during the strike. She received large amounts of back lash and was even removed as a host for The National Book Awards this year. As much as the writers were affected, actors were also impacted greatly.
SAG began striking on July 14th, 2023. They are still currently striking even though the writers ended theirs. Actors have gone without pay, without work, without recognition for a very long time and they could no longer sustain their lives in the conditions they were working in. The future of filmmaking is still up in the air according to the media. This strike has been speculated to be proof that writers and actors love what they do but will not allow their love for the art to be overshadowed by unfair working conditions.
