For decades, students at Tewksbury Memorial High School have called themselves “Redmen”, proudly wearing clothes that display the nickname or image of a Native American in a feathered headdress. Early in the school year, officials were debating whether “Redmen” should be changed to something that could not be construed as offensive to Native Americans or contribute to racial stereotyping. After many months and careful consideration, the School Committee voted 4-1 to keep the high school’s mascot as the “Redmen”. The mascot name was seen by a number of people as a dated, derogatory term for Native Americans. Others view it as a way to show their pride. With the support of The Greater Lowell Indian Cultural Association, the Tewksbury Redmen will continue on the war path.
